Re: Morrissey
There was a good BBC4 documentary a couple of years ago (from memory about the Manchester scene) where Johnny Marr went into the background of the band's break up.
They had just finished an album. Johnny Marr had written and arranged the music, run the recording session and Morrissey had been acting the diva throughout. Marr was trying to arrange a your and Morrissey wasn't getting back in contact so he went round to his house. Morrissey wouldn't answer the door and Marr had to resort to shouting through the letter box but still no answer. Morrissey was in as Marr could hear him moving about so Marr gave one last warning to Morrissey that if he didn't answer the door then Marr was leaving the band.
The was no answer so that was the end of The Smiths.

Re: Morrissey
I never really got the Smiths and Morrissey has always come across as an egotistical twat. Having said that I like Johnny Marr's guitar playing and how soon is now is an absolute classic.

Funny how the ambitious outsider....doesn't like outsiders.

RE the original post:

"The end result is he will surely never be welcomed back in to the mainstream now."

Do you think he ever WANTED to be "mainstream"? He's a strange "outsider". Sometimes talks bollocks, sometimes talks sense. But does both with wit.

I suspect his support for For Britain is partly due to their leader being a lesbian. But who knows? He's impossible to work out . As are all great artists.

Also:

It's almost impossible to be "right wing" and like The Smiths (or the solo work of Morrissey). As Johnny Marr told Cameron. Unless you're deaf.

Re: Morrissey
The funny thing is I can’t see right wing people being big fans of his or the Smiths music.
I don’t think it’s some career move. He just has his opinions and doesn’t particularly care for most people as I imagine he finds them dull and boring

And who can argue with that.
He has had his animal rights obsession all along and I don’t imagine he shares that with people that might like some of the other things he says.

I've met weller on numerous occasions and can confirm he's far from being a cunt. .top geezer.

All of these artists are very successful capitalists. Morrisy might be judging that people on the right might need a champion. Its all money.

Re: Morrissey
Never understood when people said The Smiths were depressing. I always thought they were very amusing.

He speaks some nonsense some of the time but in these days where everyone is expected to kowtow to all sorts of dreary PC shit I think it’s welcome to have some people who say what they want and obviously don’t give a shit whether people like it.
There needs to be more of it.
If you disagree with them ... argue your point.
And get a thicker skin

Not sure what Morrissey is supposed to have said now, but he is a twat and always has been. His music is shite too.

And I agree with the ant off of ant and dec comment. "Brave struggle" my arse. Hes a convicted drink driver, and that makes him a cunt in my book.

Council Scum.... clearly not.

Though in his defence i am.assuming he'd not agree with Morissey re race.. Given he married and had kids with a black woman.

"Weller fan and if he turned out to be as big a knob as Morrisey is being then I'd still love the works I've always loved"

Weller is a massive cunt of a man, so clearly it's not affected your love of his music.

Re: Morrissey
So what is the problem here, is it that some don’t like his opinions or is it that some are saying he has no right to express those opinions?

Hadn't heard about this, will definitely seek it out.

O'Leary is just one of countless bland, people-pleasing, arselickers in the media which seems to be overrun with them these days. Glastonbury coverage showed the same.

There's no characters left.

Can’t stand the man or his music but I fully defend his right to have an opinion.

Unless you’re a left wing, pro immigration, gay rights, feminist, peta Vegan you cant say fuck all without being labelled some sort of bigot.

It’s about time that free speech actually meant free speech and not just the pc bullshit your meant to say.

Re: Morrissey
I remember hearing an interview he once did with Dermot O'Leary on his Radio 2 show a few years back. To say that Morrissey was being prickly was an understatement. He was criticizing DO'L for throwing himself at every presenting job going, particularly focusing on his X-Factor role. He then suggested DO'L was a phony and a people-pleaser and just said/liked things to be popular. He seemed genuinely pissed off that DO'L was a 'fan'.

O'Leary: "Never meet your heroes"
Morrissey: "You haven't."

As someone who gets profoundly annoyed at O'Leary's ubiquitous TV appearances, I found it terrific fun.

Can't say I have ever been a Morrisey fan and certainly don't agree with the majority of what he says but I am.a huge Weller fan and if he turned out to be as big a knob as Morrisey is being then I'd still love the works I've always loved.

Re: Morrissey
Spins "The National Front Disco". Tremendous track.

Does it mean Morrissey is racist? No. Does anyone understand satire? Or social commentary?

Morrissey was lambasted years ago for saying "reggae is vile" as, the time, there were plenty reggae songs about killing "batty boys". Vilified for embracing the Union Jack flag too. Now??

Criticism of him is all a bit pathetic. I certainly don't agree with all he says, but that's not likely with any "pop star".

He's smart, eloquent, writes (often) brilliant words. The Alan Bennett of pop.

23 years ago: "The Teachers Are Afraid Of The Pupils". And so it came to pass.

If you have not guessed, I like Morrissey. He's unique.

Bouncing Ludo 4:40 Wed Jul 3
Re: Morrissey
So Morrissey is slated for spouting an (arguably true) opinion,

Danny Baker is sacked for a (probably) unintentional perceived racist tweet.

Ant McPartlin drives around pissed up, causing an accident, in which he was lucky not to kill anyone including himself, takes a year off and then returns to his lucrative job after a "brave struggle".
